Triads or three-note chords that are

to them as:
- Major
- Minor
- Augmented
- Diminished

have a solid foundation necessary to learn every other piano
chord that exists. It's true, because every other chord you'll
ever be expected to know on the piano is based on one of these
four chord types.
Once you know how to play a G Major
chord, for example, you have the foundation to play G
Major Seventh (abbreviated in music like this: Gmaj7), which is a
four note chord. Seventh chords are flavorful, adding that extra spice
to your piano playing.
