There are so many sectors of the jazz era
that you have choices within choices as to which you will get involved
in most enthusiastically.
Learning jazz piano concepts is at least as intriguing (if not
more) than those of blues piano.
Styles vary to such a large degree, and it's difficult to say which
will bring you more excitement than the others. This will be entirely
up to you.
To become acquainted with jazz piano, you'll want
to become familiar with:
- Jazz
scales - as a beginning jazz improvisor (and beyond),
scales will be your "notes of reference"
when creating your own
melodies.
- Jazz
chords - There are a number of jazz chords that you will
have at your disposal. Remember, you'll develop your repertoire of
chords as you gain more and more experience. The same goes for your
jazz scales. Still, you can enjoy the art of playing jazz piano long
before you are even close to knowing many.
- Chord
progressions - a combination of two or more chords played
in succession, such as in the 12 bar blues
(as an example), is known as a chord progression.
