The art of playing jazz piano offers a
vast arena of freedom that soon becomes a way of life, even if
you are simply playing for fun. You start to think in creative ways -
like you never did before. As a developing jazz pianist,
you possess qualities that other musicians hold in high
esteem.
You might be sitting down playing a
rendition of a favorite standard tune, such as As Time Goes
By, a fellow pianist will immediately recognize the song, but...
wow, those chords you are playing? Where did they come from?! That's
pretty much how a fellow musician without the experience you are about
to gain will be thinking. Sure enough, you'll see for
yourself.
You see, a jazz pianist knows, of course, the basic
chords other pop, rock, and classical musicians are familiar with. But
the jazz pianist goes a huge step further. He or she takes those
chords and knows how to twist them, squeeze them, doll them up and
make them sound fabulous! The arrangements of notes that results from
this kind of chord manipulation are called jazz piano
voicings. You might not know it now, but as you get into this,
you're going to amaze yourself. And, you will amaze others. Let's put
it this way: a jazz pianist is looked upon as kind of a musician's
musican...but a better way to put it might be a musician's
magician.
